You travel in a shared, air-conditioned minibus with a small group of fellow travelers, sleep one night in a standard hotel in the Dades Valley or Kalaat M’Gouna, and one night in a shared desert camp at Merzouga — riding camels into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset, and waking before dawn to watch the sunrise over the Sahara before the drive back to Marrakech.
This is the classic, no-frills version of the Sahara experience: real camels, real dunes, a real Berber camp, and the High Atlas crossing — at a price built around shared transport and shared accommodation rather than private service. Early morning pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech (pickup times vary by location — your driver will confirm the night before). Depart by shared minibus southeast over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass — Morocco’s highest paved road through the High Atlas Mountains, with stops along the way for photos and views over the valley and Berber villages.
Arrive at the UNESCO World Heritage kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou — a fortified earthen ksar used as a filming location for Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Game of Thrones. Guided walk through the kasbah.
After lunch (own expense, at a local restaurant — your guide will recommend options), continue east through Ouarzazate toward the Dades Valley or Kalaat M’Gouna (the “Town of Roses,” gateway to the Valley of Roses), depending on the day’s group schedule. Check into your standard hotel. Dinner included.

After breakfast, depart toward Todra Gorge — walk into the canyon between its towering 300-meter limestone walls, one of the most dramatic natural sites in southern Morocco. Continue east through the Tafilalt oasis region toward Merzouga.
Arrive at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes in the late afternoon. Leave the minibus and mount your camel for the guided trek into the dunes to reach your shared desert camp as the sun sets over the Sahara. Traditional Moroccan dinner at the camp (included) with music around the fire. Overnight in shared Berber tents at the camp.

Early wake-up before sunrise. Climb the dunes by foot or camel for the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi — one of the most memorable moments of the trip. Return to camp for breakfast, then board the minibus for the drive back to Marrakech, retracing the route via Todra/Dades and the Tizi n’Tichka pass (with a lunch stop along the way, own expense). Arrive back in Marrakech in the evening, with drop-off at your hotel or riad.

What is the difference between this tour and your private tours?
This is a shared/group tour: you travel in a shared minibus with other travelers, on a fixed schedule, with shared standard accommodation. Our private tours use a private vehicle and driver guide exclusively for your group, with full flexibility on timing and stops. This shared tour is significantly more affordable and is a great option for solo travelers, backpackers, and budget-conscious groups who still want the full Sahara experience.
Is the desert camp private or shared?
The desert camp tents are shared accommodation — typically twin-share rooms within the Berber-style tent camp. If you want a private tent or a more upgraded camp, ask about our private tour version or a camp upgrade supplement.
How long is the camel ride?
Approximately 45–60 minutes each way between the edge of Merzouga and the desert camp.
Can I skip the camel ride?
A 4×4 transfer to the camp is sometimes available instead of the camel ride — ask your booking agent in advance, as this depends on the specific departure and camp.
Is this tour suitable for solo travelers?
