4 Day Private Tour  Marrakech to Erg Chigaga

4 Day Marrakech to Chigaga Desert Tour Overview

This 4 day To Erg Chigaga Desert Adventure Trip, is a  private tour reaches the most remote and least-visited dune field in Morocco — Erg Chigaga — rather

than the more touristic Erg Chebbi at Merzouga. Starting in Marrakech, you cross the High Atlas, descend through

Agdz into the full length of the Draa Valley palm grove, and continue south past Zagora and Tamgrout to the very

edge of the inhabited world at M’Hamid el Ghizlane — the last village before the open Sahara.

From M’Hamid, a 4×4 transfer carries you deep into the dunes of Erg Chigaga — rising to 300 meters, the highest

and most extensive dune field in Morocco, and one that receives a fraction of the visitors of Merzouga. The return

route is equally remarkable: the dry bed of Lake Iriki, the desert crossing through Foum Zguid and Taznakht, and the

ruined Glaoui palace of Telouet on the final approach to Marrakech.

This is the private version of our Erg Chigaga itinerary — your own vehicle, your own driver guide, and full flexibility

on pace and overnight choices throughout.

Marrakech to Desert Erg Chigaga Adventure 4 Day Itinerary

Day 1- Marrakech – High Atlas – Agdz – Draa Valley – Zagora

Marrakech fi High Atlas fi Agdz fi Draa Valley fi Zagora
Private pickup from your Marrakech hotel or riad at the time you choose. Drive southeast over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass
through the High Atlas, with stops for as long as you like at the mountain viewpoints. Descend into the pre-Saharan
south and continue to Agdz, the gateway to the Draa Valley. Drive south through the Draa Valley palm grove —
200km of date palms, ancient ksour, and Berber villages lining the old caravan route — with a stop at the dramatic
Kasbah Tamnougalt. Continue to Zagora, the historic departure point for trans-Saharan caravans, famous for its
signpost reading “Tombouctou — 52 jours.” Check into your riad hotel in Zagora. Dinner included.
Overnight: Zagora riad hotel

Day 2- Zagora – Tamgrout – M’Hamid el Ghizlane – Erg Chigaga Desert

Zagora fi Tamgrout fi M’Hamid el Ghizlane fi Erg Chigaga Desert
Morning visit to Tamgrout — home to a centuries-old Koranic library housing rare illuminated manuscripts, and the
village’s distinctive green-glazed pottery workshops. Continue south along the Draa River to M’Hamid el Ghizlane —
the last permanent settlement before the open Sahara, where the paved road ends and the true desert begins. From
M’Hamid, transfer into a 4×4 vehicle for the crossing into Erg Chigaga — Morocco’s highest and most extensive dune
field, rising to 300 meters, reached by very few travelers compared to the more accessible Erg Chebbi at Merzouga.
Arrive at your desert camp deep in the dunes as the sun sets. Traditional Moroccan dinner under a sky of
extraordinary, unpolluted darkness — among the best stargazing in Morocco.
Overnight: Desert camp, Erg Chigaga (dinner included)

Day 3 – Erg Chigaga – Lake Iriki – Foum Zguid – Taznakht – Ouarzazate or Ait Ben Haddou

Erg Chigaga fi Lake Iriki fi Foum Zguid fi Taznakht fi Ouarzazate or Ait Ben
Haddou
Sunrise over the Erg Chigaga dunes — one of the most isolated and pristine desert sunrises available anywhere in
Morocco. After breakfast, 4×4 transfer back toward the paved road, crossing the edge of Lake Iriki — a vast dry salt
lake bed that fills only in exceptionally wet years, creating a surreal flat expanse of cracked earth and mirage-like
horizons. Continue through the remote desert crossing via Foum Zguid and Taznakht — small Anti-Atlas towns
known for hand-woven Berber carpets. Arrive in the late afternoon at your overnight — Ouarzazate (Morocco’s film
capital) or directly at Ait Ben Haddou, depending on your preference. Dinner included.
Overnight: Ouarzazate hotel or Ait Ben Haddou guesthouse (dinner included)

Day 4 – UNESCO Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou – Telouet – Marrakech

UNESCO Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou fi Telouet fi Marrakech
Morning guided walk through the UNESCO World Heritage kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou (if not visited the previous
evening) — a fortified earthen ksar used in Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Game of Thrones. Continue toward
Marrakech via the old mountain road through Telouet — stop at the extraordinary ruined palace of Thami El Glaoui,
the “Lord of the Atlas,” abandoned since Moroccan independence in 1956 and now standing in a state of haunting
semi-ruin, its carved plasterwork and painted tile floors open to the sky. Continue over the High Atlas and descend
into Marrakech, with direct drop-off at your hotel, riad, or the airport, timed to your onward plans.
Overnight: Tour ends — Marrakech hotel, riad, or airport

Good to Know Before Booking this Erg Chigaga 4 Day Trip •

This tour reaches Erg Chigaga, not Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) — a more remote, less-visited dune field reached only by 4×4 from M’Hamid el Ghizlane. • The 4×4 transfer from M’Hamid to the desert camp takes approximately 1.5–2 hours each way over unpaved desert tracks. • Choose your Day 3 overnight — Ouarzazate or Ait Ben Haddou — when booking. • Desert camp level (standard or luxury) is your choice; luxury camps include private en-suite tents. • This is a fully private tour — no other travelers join your vehicle or camp. • Best paired with travelers who have already done Merzouga and want a deeper, more remote Sahara experience

Frequently Asked Questions Chigaga Desert Adventure:

What is the difference between Erg Chigaga and Erg Chebbi (Merzouga)?

Erg Chebbi at Merzouga is Morocco’s most visited dune field, reachable by paved road directly to the dune edge. Erg Chigaga is larger, higher (up to 300m), and reached only by a 4×4 crossing from M’Hamid el Ghizlane — which means dramatically fewer visitors and a more profound sense of isolation and silence in the desert.

Is the 4×4 crossing comfortable?

Yes. We use well-maintained 4×4 vehicles with experienced desert drivers. The crossing is on established desert tracks, not extreme off-roading, though it is unpaved and can be bumpy. It is manageable for most travelers including families with older children.

Can this tour be combined with a Merzouga visit as well?

Yes — ask us about extending this itinerary to include both Erg Chigaga and Erg Chebbi in a longer journey. This requires additional days; contact us for a custom quote.

What is Telouet Kasbah?

Telouet was the palace of Thami El Glaoui, a Berber chieftain who ruled the High Atlas as a personal feudal kingdom until Moroccan independence in 1956. Abandoned overnight after independence, it stands today in a dramatic state of semi-ruin — one of the most haunting and historically significant sites in Morocco, and almost entirely overlooked by standard tours.

What is the best time of year for this Chigaga tour?

September to April is ideal. Summer temperatures in the open Sahara at Erg Chigaga regularly exceed 42°C and are demanding even with early morning activities. Spring and autumn offer the best balance of warm days and comfortable desert nights, Read More
